- Example: - Lets say you own a candy store that sells jelly beans. People are coming in and asking for 50,100,1000 jelly beans. - Do you want to count them all the time?
- You know now that 10 beans= 50g. - How would you measure out 10,000 beans?
- A customer wants 1000 jelly beans and 1000 mints - Jelly beans one jelly bean= 5 g - Mints one mint = 15g
- Lets say this customer comes back and has the same request for 1000 jelly beans and 1000 mints. What would you do?
- 15,000g of mints/5,000g of jelly beans
Application to Chemistry
- If you replace jelly beans and mints for different element, the process is the same to determine ratio for compounds. CO Which one has more mass C or O?
- atomic mass unit(amu) - 1amu= 1.66x10-23 g
- 15.999 amu= 1 O atom - 3.00x1020amu of carbon, how many atom are there. 1 Carbon atom = 12.01 amu
Mole
- Conversion between Gram and Mole. -Molar Mass Conversion between Atom and Moles - Avogradro’s number Conversion between Volume and Mole - 22.4 L = 1 mole
- Empirical formula - A formula of a compound the expresses the smallest whole- number ratio of the atoms present - ex. CH2O Molecular formula - The actual formula of a compound - ex. C6H12O6
